The Red Devils made one last proper tour of the UK in late 1993 before the new year would see the band finally disintegrate into various incarnations of “The Red Devils” and Bruce Willis’ backing band.
One of those final December dates would be played in a former public toilet turned nightclub in Kent, England.
The band’s Dec. 9, 1993, date at The Forum in Tunbridge Wells was previewed in the Dec. 3 edition of The Tunbridge Wells Courier:
The brief article by David Jarvis is notable for a few things:
- Is this the final gasp of the “Mick Jagger actually recorded an album with The Red Devils” narrative that had been a hallmark of the Devils’ press kit for more than a year?
- The unusual band photo appears to show then-current guitarist Zach Zunis rather than Paul Size, who is still mentioned in the story. We’ve not seen this image before, but this blown-out copy is doing wild things to Lester Butler’s upper lip and Jonny Ray Bartel’s forehead.
- The Lynyrd Skynyrd tour, though planned, did not occur.
- Finally, and with the benefit of hindsight, this is an unusually optimistic news blurb given that the band had already been splintering and Rick Rubin seemingly had been losing interest in The Red Devils.
