Why was Jonny Ray Bartel sitting during The Red Devils’ Allman Brothers tour? The story behind these pics

A newly discovered set of live Red Devils photos from 1992 show the band at a critical moment in their first U.S. tour.

The images are from The Red Devils’ opening slot for the Allman Brothers on Aug. 23, 1992, at the New Haven Coliseum in New Haven, Connecticut. The tour started six days earlier, in New Jersey, so the gang still looks pretty fresh: Lester Butler hasn’t started wearing the bandana yet, and Paul Size is dressing clean.

But the interesting fashion detail belongs to Jonny Ray Bartel, and explains why the bassist is sitting down.

Jonny Ray broke his right fibula in a skateboarding mishap on July 24 and was sporting a leopard print cast for this leg of the tour. You can see the cast a little better in the photo detail below.

Unfortunately, we do not know who the photographer was at this show. If you have more info, let us know.
