Columnist Loretta Milazzo offers this account of the early days of The Blue Shadows at the King King club in Hollywood. The band was 17 months into its Monday residency, with a regular lineup of Bateman, Jonny Ray Bartel and Dave Alvin, plus Dave Lee Bartel and Lester Butler.

Bateman recalls the nascent scene at King King, where Monday nights were dedicated to a dance club called Smokey Ho’s:
“It was the hippest little place that was going at the time, and I was in one of the bands that came in and jammed every once in a while.”
The Blue Shadows’ momentum continued through 1990, including a Monday night Christmas Eve show at the King King, as noted in the Dec. 21, 1990, LA Weekly:
